“When Breath Becomes Air” by Paul Kalanithi – At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. The book chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student to a neurosurgeon to a patient and new father confronting his own mortality.
“Gratitude” by Oliver Sachs – During the last few months of his life, Oliver Sacks wrote a set of essays in which he movingly explored his feelings about completing a life and coming to terms with his own death. These four essays form an ode to the uniqueness of each human being and gratitude for the gift of life.
