Getting back to holiday family traditions with a recipe from JourneyCare Chef

This holiday season, so many of us are looking forward to finally gathering once again for food, fun and family traditions with our loved ones after being apart last year.

Families will rekindle traditions that help build bonds and are part of what makes them unique and special. For Chef Liz Blume, who cooks for patients and families at the JourneyCare Marshak Family CareCenter in Glenview, she looks forward to continuing a beloved family food tradition.

“I have always loved how food brings people together like family,” she says.

For the past 35 years, her family’s tradition has been to make Swedish meatballs from scratch for Christmas dinner. She and her brother would help roll the meatballs and when she was old enough, Chef Liz was in charge of making the special sauce.

In addition to making their special recipe for the holidays, Chef Liz is now engaged to a man who brings his own traditional Italian family meatball recipe to the table.

“I am looking forward to the variety of meatballs at our holiday parties because we both refuse to give up our family meatball traditions!” she says.

Try the Blume family’s Swedish Meatballs and a bonus dessert recipe below.



Swedish Meatballs

Meatball Mixture Ingredients:
  • 1lb ground beef
  • 8 oz ground pork
  • 1 c plain bread crumbs
  • 1 c milk
  • ¼ c finely chopped celery
  • ¼ c finely chopped onion
  • ¼ c finely chopped parsley
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
Creamy Dill Sauce Ingredients:
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2 c beef broth
  • 1 c sour cream
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill
  • ¼ tsp fresh grated lemon peel
Meatball Directions:
  1. Melt 2 tbsp butter in skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add half the meatballs in a single layer and cook for 10 minutes until brown.
  3. Remove from pan and heat 2 more tbsp of butter and cook the remaining meatballs. Remove from pan and begin making sauce.
Sauce Directions:
  1. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir in flour and let bubble for 2 minutes.
  3. Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth. Simmer 10-12 mins until slightly thickened while stirring often.
  4. Stir in sour cream, dill, and lemon peel.
  5. Serve over meatballs.



Blume family traditional Christmas Jell-O.

Eat it with your meal or for dessert!

Ingredients:
  • 2 c boiling water
  • 6 oz box orange jell-o
  • ½ c cold water
  • 2 c cool whip, thawed
  • Mandarin oranges
Directions:
  1. Dissolve Jell-O in the boiling water then add cold water.
  2. Stir in cool whip until melted. Stir in mandarin oranges.
  3. Pour into Jell-O mold and place in fridge overnight. It will separate into 2 layers during chilling.
