This year, JourneyCare welcomes the Sepe Family as the 2020 Virtual Duck Race Honorary Chairs, held on August 29. Our nonprofit hospice and palliative care organization is deeply grateful for their support of our mission and our pediatric All About Kids program.
Why they support JourneyCare: The Sepe family was introduced to JourneyCare by a Barrington resident who was familiar with the All About Kids program. As a baby, the Sepe’s youngest daughter, Scarlett, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and was in need of acute medical care. Rachel Sepe, Scarlett’s mom, was surprised to learn that along with Scartlett’s pediatric doctors, the additional support they needed was right in Barrington – their own backyard!
How JourneyCare helped Scarlett: The Sepes were able to take advantage of nearly all of the JourneyCare services: nursing, a Child Life Specialist, pet therapy, volunteer support and more. JourneyCare helped them throughout those years by addressing Scarlett’s needs within the context of the family needs. As Rachel recalls, “When your life is turned upside down it is wonderful to have care, support, and respect when you need it the most.”
What this means today: Scarlett is now 9 years old and her condition is more stable. The Sepe family is able to maintain her needs independently and are thankful for the years of support that have brought them to where they are today. As part of the JourneyCare family, their other children Gavin and Isabella are involved in the JourneyCare Juniors and Youth Advisory Board. This year, Scarlett will join her brother as a JourneyCare Junior, coming full circle and giving back, helping patients and families through some of the toughest times as they face serious illness and the end of life. JourneyCare is deeply thankful to the Sepe family for sharing their story and being here for JourneyCare today, so we can continue helping patients and families for years to come.
