Needed by August 12: Letters to Our Heroes!

On Friday, August 12th, 2016

Honor Flight (www.honorflight.org) is a nationwide initiative created to fly our country’s veterans, at no cost to themselves, to Washington D. C. to see the memorials built to honor their sacrifice and service. There are more than 130 Honor Flight hubs around the country. Their priority has been to honor WWII Veterans, who are dying at a rate of more than 500 every day, before they are all gone. (Fewer than 900,000 of the 16+ million American Veterans who fought between 1941-1945 remain, so time is of the essence). While on their Honor Flight, each veteran is assigned a personal “guardian,” whose mission is to ensure the safety of their veteran and to guarantee that each is treated with the greatest respect and honor. During the entire journey they are celebrated as the true heroes they are.

JourneyCare has an active partnership with Lake County Honor Flight, based in North Chicago, which will fly 20 veterans to Washington D.C. on August 13-14.

While on the return flight from their journey, one of the highlights is “Mail Call.” Each veteran is given a mailbag stuffed with letters addressed to him or her, all of them expressing love, support and gratitude. Some letters are from family members, but others include their congresspersons, other dignitaries, friends and complete strangers who want to reach out and let these heroes know they are so appreciated.

Your cards and letters are needed! Any type of note, of any length, is welcome. The veterans’ names and branch of service are listed below. You can return all letters to the address below by August 10 or direct them to Linda Rockwell, our We Honor Veterans program manager, at the Glenview office by Friday, August 12. Linda will personally deliver your letters at the Honor Flight departure on August 13.

Any questions? Please contact Linda at Lrockwell@carecenter.org or 847-556-1778.
